A conversation with one of my longest-standing clients recently took me straight back more than ten years.
We were talking about suppliers when she mentioned a hair vendor we had dealt with during one of our earliest buying trips together in China.
She still remembered what happened that day.
So did I. 😂
It was one of those moments that seemed chaotic at the time, but looking back, it became the beginning of a relationship built on trust.
It Started With a Buying Trip
When we first met, she came to China to buy hair and beauty products.
I accompanied her to a beauty wholesale market, helping with communication, product selection and purchasing.
At that time, I probably thought of myself mainly as an interpreter.
She selected a number of hair products, including A-grade goods.
Later, we realized that the total volume would be too large and inconvenient to carry, so she decided to cancel part of the purchase.
That should have been a simple adjustment.
But while the seller was speaking to his staff in Chinese, I overheard something my client could not understand.
They were going to quietly replace the A-grade hair we had selected with B-grade hair.
My client was standing right beside me.
She could not understand the conversation.
But I could.
I Couldn’t Pretend I Hadn’t Heard It
I immediately stopped them and objected.
I told the seller that if the goods were being changed to B-grade, the client had to know — and the price had to reflect what she was actually receiving.
Things escalated very quickly.
The shop owner became angry. We argued. She insulted me and pushed me.
I pushed back.
Eventually, I called the police.
Definitely not what I had expected when I woke up that morning thinking I was going to do an interpreting job. 😂
But the important part was what happened in the end:
We paid the B-grade price for the B-grade goods.
My client did not end up paying an A-grade price for products that had been switched behind her back.
Years Later, She Still Remembered
Recently, she told me something I had almost forgotten.
After she returned to the United States, that same seller continued emailing her and trying to work with her directly.
She refused.
And this was how she explained it:
“I told them my agent didn’t approve and I paid her to watch out for my best interest.”
Reading that message immediately brought me back to that afternoon in the wholesale market.

That Was the Beginning of Real Trust
After that trip, she knew something important about me:
If I saw something wrong, I would not keep quiet just to make a transaction easier.
From then on, the trust between us grew.
She gradually entrusted me with her purchasing work in China, from communicating with suppliers and checking products to following production and handling the countless details that happen between an idea and an actual shipment.
I have always taken that trust seriously.
I Have Learned a Lot From Her Too
She is much more than a buyer I have worked with for many years.
She is a highly successful businesswoman with experience in luxury residential development and construction, as well as wholesale beauty and hair products.
Over the years, I have watched how she does business, how she treats people and how she makes decisions.
And in many ways, she has taught me something too.
You do not have to choose between being a good person and being good at business.
Integrity, kindness and commercial success are not opposites.
In fact, the longer I work in international trade, the more I believe they are connected.
Deals come and go.
Suppliers come and go.
Sometimes even businesses come and go.
But trust compounds.
Perhaps that is why a relationship that started with a chaotic afternoon in a wholesale market — complete with an argument and a police call 😂 — is still here more than ten years later.
I am grateful for the business, of course.
But I am even more grateful for the trust. ❤️
