Same Factory, Different Quality: What I Found During an Inspection in China

One thing I’ve learned from working with factories in China:

The factory name alone doesn’t tell you the quality you’re getting.

Sometimes, the same factory is producing very different levels of quality at the same time.

I saw a very clear example of this during an inspection.

Same Factory. Two Different Specifications.

The product was a commercial milk tea counter with refrigeration underneath.

While checking the units in production, I noticed something interesting.

There were two versions being made in the same factory.

One version used copper wire.

The other used iron wire — with only a short section of copper wire connected at the visible end.

Copper outside. Iron inside.

At first glance, especially after assembly, a buyer could easily assume that the wiring was copper.

That small detail makes a big difference.

If you only look at the finished product, a sample, or a few photos sent by the supplier, you may never notice what is actually being used inside.

The Lowest Quote Doesn’t Always Mean the Same Product

This is something international buyers sometimes underestimate when comparing quotations from China.

You may send the same product photo to three suppliers and receive three very different prices.

It’s tempting to assume:

“They’re all making basically the same thing, so I’ll choose the cheapest one.”

But sometimes they are not quoting the same product at all.

The exterior may look almost identical while the internal materials, components, thickness, hardware, wiring or construction are different.

And sometimes, even within the same factory, different quality levels are being produced for different customers and different price points.

This Is Why Production Inspection Matters

A beautiful showroom tells you what a factory can make.

The production floor tells you what it is actually making.

When possible, I prefer to see the product during production — before everything is assembled, covered and packed.

That is often where the most important details are still visible.

I Sent the Photos to My Client

When I spotted the difference, I photographed it and explained what I had found.

Her response made me smile:

“That is why I and Kathy have you 😁”

And then:

“You are worth the fee you charge. Never be afraid to charge for your time.”

I still remember that conversation.

Because this is exactly where being on the ground becomes valuable.

It isn’t simply about finding a factory.

It is about understanding what you are actually buying.

For Importers, Distributors and Brands

If you import products from China, don’t compare quotations by price alone.

Compare the specification behind the price.

Ask what materials are being used. Confirm critical components. Check production when necessary.

And make sure the product you approved is the product that is actually being manufactured.

Because two products can look the same in a catalogue — and be very different once you look underneath.
