US Container Imports Surge to 2.622 Million TEU

In July 2025, US container imports climbed to 2.622 million TEU, marking the second-highest monthly record ever. The volume rose 18.2% month-over-month, trailing only the May 2022 peak by just 555 TEU. This sharp rebound highlights the ongoing resilience of US demand for overseas goods.

China Leads With 923,000 TEU, 35.2% Market Share

China remains the top source country, shipping 923,000 TEU to the US in July—an extraordinary 44.4% month-over-month increase. This accounted for 35.2% of all US container imports, underscoring China’s dominant role in US-China trade relations.

East Coast Ports Outperform the West

The East Coast ports led the surge. Port of Houston saw imports from China rise by an astonishing 122%, the highest growth nationwide. Savannah recorded a 90.2% increase, while New York/New Jersey climbed 69.5%.

On the West Coast, Los Angeles and Long Beach also posted solid gains of 33.6% and 26.7% respectively, though their growth lagged behind the East Coast.

Drivers Behind the Import Surge

This import boom is fueled by two main factors: seasonal demand ahead of peak retail season, and a tariff suspension “front-loading effect”, prompting US importers to accelerate shipments before duties are reinstated. These dynamics have amplified shipping volumes and created a new wave of import surge from China.

China’s Position in US Supply Chain Stays Strong

Despite ongoing trade tensions, China’s role in US supply chains remains unshakable. With its ability to supply large volumes quickly, China continues to dominate US container shipping, reinforcing its position as the largest source of imports to America.
